2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Prado) in Kenya: Review, Prices & Specs
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (replacing the Prado J150) is the biggest shake-up in the model's history since 2009. Known simply as the Land Cruiser 250 series (or just "Land Cruiser" in some markets), it ditches the curves of the old Prado for a blocky, retro design inspired by the legendary FJ60. It sits on the GA-F platform (shared with the LC300) and brings electric power steering and hybrid tech to the bush.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
The 250 series simplifies the lineup but adds tech:
- 2.8L Turbo Diesel (1GD-FTV): 201 HP / 500 Nm. STANDARD The proven engine from the Hilux/Prado 150, now updated with a new turbo and an 8-speed automatic (replacing the 6-speed) for better response.
- 2.7L Petrol (2TR-FE): 163 HP. The indestructible engine carries over for base models. Slow but simple.
- 2.8L Diesel Hybrid (48V): Coming to select markets. Adds mild-hybrid assist for smoother stop-start.
Interior & Practicality
- Modern Rugged: The interior uses chunky buttons and a horizontal dashboard layout for better visibility. Dual 12.3-inch screens are available on higher trims.
- Seating: Available in 5 or 7 seats. The 3rd row now folds flat into the floor (finally!), creating a level cargo area without the awkward step of the J150.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 11–13 km/l (Diesel). The 8-speed auto keeps revs lower on the highway.
- Service: Parts for the 1GD engine are ubiquitous. However, body panels and lights for the 250 series are new and expensive.
- EPS: The switch to Electric Power Steering (EPS) removes the hydraulic pump, reducing maintenance and enabling Lane Trace Assist.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
SDM Technology: The 250 features a Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM). You can press a button to disconnect the front sway bar for massive wheel articulation off-road, then reconnect it for stable highway driving. It is the perfect dual-purpose vehicle for Nairobi and the Mara.
Safety & Reliability
Comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The GA-F frame is 50% more rigid than the J150. Reliability is expected to be flawless, carrying the Land Cruiser torch.
💰 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Price in Kenya

The Ci Verdict
Who is this for? The Kenyan who wants the ultimate "do-it-all" vehicle—prestigious enough for the office, tough enough for the farm. Who is it NOT for? Those expecting a car-like ride—it is still a body-on-frame truck.
