2019 Daihatsu Copen in Kenya: Review, Prices & Specs
2019 Daihatsu Copen: A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Daihatsu Copen (LA400K) is a toy for grown-ups. Origin: Japan. First Generation: The cute, round L880K launched in 2002. Current Generation: 2nd Generation (LA400K, launched 2014). This generation introduced the revolutionary "D-Frame" chassis, which is so rigid that the body panels are merely cosmetic "skins" made of resin. You can literally unbolt the fenders, bonnet, and bumpers and swap them to change the car from a "Robe" (modern) to a "Cero" (retro round lights) look. It is a customizable Kei sports car.
Quick Specs
Engine Options & Model Codes
A pocket rocket engine:
- 660cc Turbo (KF-VET): 64 HP / 92 Nm. STANDARD This 3-cylinder turbo provides spirited performance in a car weighing only 850kg. It comes with a 5-speed Manual or a 7-speed CVT with paddle shifters. The manual is the enthusiast's choice, but the CVT is surprisingly responsive in Sport mode.
Interior & Practicality
- Active Top: The electrically operated hardtop folds into the boot in about 20 seconds. With the roof up, the boot fits a couple of soft bags. With the roof down, the boot is effectively gone (only space for an umbrella).
- Cockpit Feel: The cabin is tight but ergonomic. Recaro seats are optional on "S" trims and highly recommended for support.
Fuel Efficiency & Ownership Costs
- Consumption: 18–22 km/l. It allows for cheap thrills.
- Service: The KF engine is shared with many Daihatsu/Toyota models (Pixis), so filters are available. However, body panels and roof mechanism parts are unique and must be imported from Japan if damaged.
- Tyres: 165/50R16. Low profile and specific size. Ensure you have a supplier.
Suitability for Kenyan Roads
Strictly Tarmac: 110mm clearance is very low. You will scrape on standard Kenyan speed bumps if you don't take them diagonally. It is a weekend car for Langata Road or the Southern Bypass, not for daily commuting through potholed estate roads.
Safety & Reliability
Standard VSC (Vehicle Stability Control). The rigid D-Frame provides good crash protection for a Kei car. Reliability is excellent; the roof mechanism is robust if kept clean.
