2019 Audi A3 (8V): A Carimports.co.ke Review
The Big Picture
The 2019 Audi A3 is part of the 3rd Generation (8V Series), which set the standard for premium compact cars upon its launch in 2012. The A3 nameplate itself dates back to 1996. The 2019 model is the facelifted version (8.5V), featuring sharper headlights and dynamic turn signals. Available as a Sportback (Hatch) or Sedan, it offers the build quality of a flagship Audi in a parking-friendly size.
Powertrain & Performance
The A3 shares its MQB platform with the VW Golf, but the engines are tuned for greater refinement:
- 1.4L TFSI (CoD): The highlight of the range. "Cylinder on Demand" technology shuts off two cylinders when cruising to save fuel. It produces 150 hp and achieves brilliant economy of 16โ18 km/l without feeling slow.
- 2.0L TFSI (Quattro): For those who need speed. Producing 190 hp and driving all four wheels, it turns the A3 into a "warm hatch" capable of embarrassing larger cars at traffic lights.
Design & Practicality
The interior feels significantly more expensive than a VW Golf, with pop-up infotainment screens and tactile metal knurling on the dials. Rear legroom is adequate for children but tight for tall adults. Ground clearance is 140mm, which is manageable for city driving but requires care on steep apartment ramps.
Reliability & Maintenance
The 7-speed S-Tronic gearbox is the main maintenance item (fluid every 60k km). The Mechatronic unit failures common in older models are rare in the 2019 generation. The 1.4 TFSI engine is reliable, but ensure the spark plugs are changed on schedule to maintain the smooth operation of the Cylinder-on-Demand system.

The Ci Verdict
The 2019 Audi A3 is the "Premium Golf." It shares 80% of its parts with the VW Golf but offers 100% more status. If you want a small, efficient car but still want to park in the "Reserved" slot at the office, this is the one.
